The Most Fascinating and Hilarious Bird

While there might be hundreds of funny animals in the world, the Potoo bird is most likely the funniest of them all. Not only does it have an unfortunate name, but it also looks like that one friend of yours who always needs someone to explain jokes and punchlines to him.

You may have seen it in your journey through the most hilarious pics on the Internet and you may have created funny little memes about it. But I bet you didn’t know that they use their plumage as camouflage, giving this funny-looking bird the appearance of a tree-trunk. Pretty nifty trick, eh?

When it’s not tripping out other birds by impersonating trees and/or branches, the Potoo uses its freakishly large mouth to hunt beetles, moths and other insects. Since it would distract the other animals from their daily routine, the Potoo only comes out at night.

There’s even a legend about this funny little bird, which says that the Common Potoo’s call is actually a cry for the moon. Apparently, the call is the mourning song of a spirit that is in love with the moon’s spirit. The Potoo is nothing if not romantic like that.

Aside from being a hilarious bird, the Potoo is also as lazy as a sloth on vacation. Instead of wasting time building a nest, this lazy bastard lays a single egg inside the nook of a branch or a broken stem. Even more, they rely solely on camouflage to protect their eggs and youngins from predators. God forbid should an eagle want to land on what looks like a tree-stump, but is actually a Potoo bird and its best attempt at making sure its genes survive and grow into pretend-stumps themselves.

All of the above fun facts about this bird all lead up to the fact that Potoos are monogamous birds. That’s right, they mate for life and parents share responsibilities for the incubation of the egg and raising their spawn, because the Potoo bird believes in equality among the sexes and equal parenting. Yes, the Potoo parents are all about teamwork.
